A Glimpse Of The Past Through The Air Force Collection - The men and women of today's Air Force are keenly aware of that they are the beneficiaries of the long and storied history of aviation. The equipment used today would stagger even the brilliant imaginations of the early aviation pioneers. Once the twin challenges of powered and controlled flight were met by the Wright brothers, improved airframes, engines, navigational equipment and fuels contributed to longer range and durability as well as to the use of airplanes as military equipment. A great debt is owed to the early pioneers of aviation. In the first 50 years of the independent Air Force, a number of events and people have been commemorated with postage stamps: • Hap Arnold did the most to shape and bring to reality the independent Air Force, later becoming first permanent 5 star General. • Chuck Yeager made the first supersonic flight in the Bell XS-1. • First B52A rolls out in 1954. • First Academy class sworn in in 1955 at Lowry Air Force Base, Colorado. • USAF E. White makes first US spacewalk on the June, 1965 Gemini 4 mission. • Neil Armstrong, USAF "Buzz" Aldrin and Michael Collins take part in mankind's 1st moon landing. • USAF Brand and Slayton take part in Apollo-Soyuz. • July 4, 1983 the Thunderbirds perform their first demo in their new F16As over Coney Island, NY. • USAF James Irwin and David Scott take part in the 4th lunar landing and the first to use the Lunar Rover. • Richard Byrd, best known for making the first flight over the North Pole, commanded the United States Air Force of Canada in 1918, and had a major influence on early aviation in pushing the envelope. • The role of the USAF has always been, and will always be, exceedingly important, but also exciting and on the cutting edge.
