A Glimpse Of The Past Through The Auto Dealer Collection - The love affair with the automobile is contagious, international, and shows no signs of ending. Auto racing in all parts of the world continues as the most intense and by far the major proving ground for progress in the industry, ever since the first cumbersome steam powered devices appeared in the early 1800’s, mainly used for freight hauling. But the patenting of the gasoline engine by Italians Barsanti and Matteucci in 1853 made possible the first crude, but practical autos. In Europe, Karl Benz is generally acknowledged as producing the first successful petro-powered motor car in 1853. The first successful American car was a three-wheeler developed by John W. Lambert in Ohio City in early 1891. In 1895 Charles and Frank Duryea founded the Duryea Motor Wagon Company in Springfield, Massachusetts. The U.S. auto industry literally exploded and by 1904 there were about 170 automobile companies in operation. Henry Ford, after a number of false starts, founded the Ford Motor Company in 1903, with Detroit becoming the primary production location.
