A Glimpse Of The Past Through the California Collection: The first European to visit California was Juan Cabrillo, who sailed into San Diego Bay June 1542, but it was not until 1769 that Franciscan Junipero Serra founded the first of 21 missions at San Diego. The first civil settlement was El Pueblo de San Jose de Guadalup at Alta. After unsuccessful attempts to purchase California from independent Mexico the U.S. took California in the Mexican War and the Guadalupe Hidalgo Treaty of 1848. On Jan. 24, 1848, gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill, on the South Fork of the American River, and thus began an incredible migration that saw California's population jump from 15,000 to 250,000 by 1852. Throughout its history, California has usually been in the lead of virtually every phase of business, life and life-style. Only in California!
