A Glimpse Of The Past Through The Coast Guard Collection - The Coast Guard is one of the oldest organizations under the government. At the request of Alexander Hamilton, Congress, in 1790 authorized the building of "ten boats" to assist in the collection of customs and dues, initially called the Revenue Cutter Service. On January 28, 1915, Congress merged it with the US Life Saving Service forming the Coast Guard. In 1939 the Lighthouse Service was made part of the Coast Guard, as was the Bureau of Marine Inspection and Navigation in 1942. A 1941 amendment stipulated that "the Coast Guard shall be a military service and constitute a branch of the land and naval forces of the United States under the Treasury Dept. in peacetime and under the Navy in time of war." The Coast Guard Academy is in New London, Connecticut. Its historic motto is still Semper Paratus, Always Ready. Coast Guard!
