A Glimpse Of The Past Through the Hawaii Collection: The history before the coming of Europeans consists of oral tradition of a people who had no written language. Explorers from southern Polynesia discovered and settled the islands. The first outsider was Capt. James Cook in 1778, who named the islands the Sandwich Islands. It was Kamehameha, a strong and intelligent ruler, who united the islands for the first time in 1810. Statehood came in 1959, and today the "Islands" are a premier tourist destination. It is the final resting place of Charles Lindberg who called it "my beloved islands". A tropical paradise. Hawaii!
