A Glimpse Of The Past Through The Hockey Collection - Ice hockey is actually an adaptation of field hockey, and was developed in Canada where it is the national winter sport. In the 1870's a game similar to what we have today caught on at McGill University in Montreal, and an amateur league was formed in 1885. The National Hockey League was formed in 1908 representing all Canadian teams, with Boston becoming the first U.S. city in the league in 1924. Today the Stanley Cup is competed for by teams from Canada and all over the U.S. including the south. Of course, Olympic Hockey is a spectacular main event.
