A Glimpse Of The Past Through the North Carolina Collection: The Tar Heel State has one of the oldest of American histories in that it was one of the original 13 colonies, and the 12th state admitted to the United States. It was Queen Elizabeth who gave Sir Walter Raleigh permission, in 1584, to begin a colony in the New World, and in 1585 the colony was established on Roanoke Island in North Carolina. The colonists returned to England with Sir Francis Drake in 1586 because of hardship, but a second colony was started in 1587. It was in this colony that the first English child was born in the New World - Virginia Dare. This “Lost Colony” simply vanished into history, with only a single word “Croatan” carved on a doorpost as a possible clue to their disappearance. The story of the Roanoke Voyages is the story of the very first attempts to establish settlements in the New World. From Kitty Hawk to the Cape Hatteras lighthouse, North Carolina is simply historic!
