A Glimpse Of The Past Through The Orothpedic Surgeon Collection - Orthopaedic Surgeons are thought of with special respect by those seeking treatment of injuries to their bones, joints and muscles. Building on previous science, orthopaedics has historical roots in many branches of science and can point to a host of medical individuals. One was Joel Ernest Goldthwait, who organized the orthopaedic department at MGH in 1899. He advanced orthopaedics from "a fledgling subspecialty" into a far ranging field, served as the president of the American Orthopaedic Association, and was a founding member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
