A Glimpse Of The Past Through The Postmaster Collection - Today's Postmaster is the one in charge of a post office and the distribution and forwarding of mail. A much older meaning was the person in charge of a station for the accommodation of travelers, and the one who supplies horses. In the American colonies the first postal service was in Massachusetts in 1639, when the General Court issued the following: "It is ordered that notice be given that Richard Fairbanks, his house in Boston, is the place appointed for all letters, which are brought from beyond the seas, or are sent thither, to be left with him, and he is to take care that they are to be delivered or sent according to direction: and he is allowed for every letter a penny, and he must answer all messages through his neglect of this kind." Benjamin Franklin was the first postmaster general of the United States. From this grew our present vast postal system handling untold billions of pieces of mail annually! And each and every post office is in the charge of the local Postmaster!
