A Glimpse Of The Past Through The Radiologist Collection - Imagine being present when the first MRI technology was demonstrated to doctors, specialists in many fields of medicine? They would have witnessed a medical miracle. We take for granted the routine use of X rays, mammograms, CAT scans, PET scans, MRIs and Ultrasound. Think of what this means, or could have meant, and how lives might have changed for the individuals and their fields of practice commemorated here. Radiologists are physicians who, after med school, spend an additional 4-5 years studying diagnostic, therapeutic, or interventional radiology. In the US, an individual is eligible for exam by the Board after completing a residency program. Successful candidates are entitled to the designation of diplomats of the American Board of Radiology. An individual may train for an additional year or two in a subspecialty such as neuroradiology or pediatric, skeletal, genitourinary, or gastrointestinal radiology. They may then confine their practice to a particular aspect of radiology or simply demonstrate a special interest in that area while practicing general diagnostic radiology. Career opportunities in radiology include practice in a hospital or private office, or both, as well as teaching, research, or administration. The field of Radiology resulted from the discovery of X rays by the German physicist Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen in 1893, for which he was awarded the first Nobel Prize in physics in 1901. Probably the first practical use, and also the first peaceful use, of atomic related energy.
