A Glimpse Of The Past Through The Rodeo Collection - Rodeo is a sport featuring riding, roping, steer wrestling and many other contests developed by the cattle industry in the western U.S. in the early 1880's. The first public contest for prizes for bronco riding and roping took place in a field near the courthouse in Pecos, Texas, July 4, 1883 with no admission charge, and the first contest with an admission fee took place in Prescott, Arizona Territory, July 4, 1888. It seems only natural to organize contests featuring the incredible horseman feats the cowboys developed. Buffalo Bill Cody presented his Wild West Shows and while not actually rodeos, they promoted the culture of the cowboy around the world and thus had a positive effect on the popularity of the rodeo. Today the rodeo is very active, especially in the west, and has gained a vast national following for the highly coveted championship belt buckles and handsome prizes.
