A Glimpse Of The Past Through The Whales Collection - Whales are a wholly aquatic mammal of the order Cetacea, and the term popularly describes the larger members of the order. In the suborder Odontoceti, family Delphinidae, are the Dolphins including the so called killer "whale", actually a dolphin. The far-reaching adaptations of whales for acquatic life make them the most atypical of mammals. Being air breathers, whales have lungs and other features that enable them to stay submerged for an hour at a time. Whales had been hunted for centuries for their oil and blubber, and after hunting had drastically depleted their population, it was ironically the discovery of crude oil that lessened the demand for whale oil and ultimately saved them. Being the largest mammals, with incredible grace, they are truly fascinating creatures. Whales!
